Is Self-Care “Selfish”

Writer: Jessie KretzerJessie Kretzer

On the 7th day after creating the world...Jesus rested! But I think I can push through and keep going, because certainly my responsibilities and my to do list is way more important than creating the world!!!!

As absurd as that sounds, it makes me laugh to even write it, but truth be known that is how I operate at times. Remember, I too am a work in progress and I’ve yet to arrive. I’m the girl that NEVER catches what goes around, and if I get a hint of something, it is gone before it turns into anything.

I came upon a quote in my journal, “You will never know your limits until you push yourself to them”. Really, I have to be so foolish at times to push myself beyond the limit so I can learn lessons to share with others? Ah, the life of a Beacon of Hope, blogger!!!

I am sure now that I have answered the call to blog life lessons!!! So let me answer the question loud and clear, is self-care selfish, NO, my heavens, NO it is NOT!!! I am SO much better than I used to be, but I am not where I need to be, will you get better at it every day with me?

I teach people how to live a holistic healthy life!!! I have grown by leaps and bounds practicing self-care and standing on my soap box about it with or without an audience. My coach would say, you’ve come a long way baby!!! I would say, “you are not there, yet, don’t expect to arrive anytime soon, and keep working at it!!!

So here is what I learned, as I found something I wasn’t looking for, MY LIMITS!!! I took advantage of my health and my energizer-bunny level of energy and I got blind sided with a set back call a pesky flu/cold. Now, as long as I learn from it, fess up and use it as a teaching opportunity, it has value!!!! Don’t we want all that we do to have value?

Some lessons we must learn over and over and for this type A, I just got a better refresher course, than I signed up for, but it was worth it as I tap on the keys, with fresh zeal today, to bring you this encouragement.

Some things will always be a work in progress, and I will continue to teach others and remind myself that NO, self-care is NOT selfish!

Self-care is a little like insurance, keep the premium paid up and you will be covered and not have to worry.

You can google all the great health reasons why self-care is a must and you can google a 101 ideas of how to do some great self-care, but today this post is to serve as a warning and a wake-up call to you my friend to decide today, you are going to do a little self-care every day. We don’t even want to know all the things it will keep away, but I know you will be better for it!!!

Learn a lesson from my setback! Here are a few of my favorites!!!

💐 A nice bath with total silence!

💐 A walk outside without headphones, listen to nature.

💐Deep breathing

💐Childs pose & worship music

💐A walk in the park

Finally, let me leave you with a profound quote that I read today, as a result of the champion in my life seeing what I needed when I couldn’t.

“Turn your back on others, until you have returned to being your best self”*.

Now, let me point out two important things here 1) we all need a champion like that in our life, if you don’t have one, leave a comment and I’ll be happy to address some tips on that topic. Secondly, the sound of turning my back on anyone seems like the most horrible thing I could do, but the wisdom here is that it is exactly what I must do for a brief time while I fill my pitcher.

Cheers to you as you plan what your self-care will be today!!!
